The BASE campaign proposes to remedy this

Due to archaic building codes, the majority of NYC families cannot currently use their basements to house their own family or as rental units to support their own income.

On January 26th 2021, the BASE campaign formally launched our 2021 Blueprint for the BASE Campaign. This included a framework for legislation, the changes we want to see, and a pledge for candidates to sign on to.

Do you live in a Basement Apartment? Then the Census is for you too. Detractors of Basement Apartments often use the rhetoric that Basement Apartments take away resources from the community, this can't be further from the truth. The only thing that can take away resources is an Undercount. Get counted today! Filling out the Census will not jeopardize your housing situation but can only improve your neighborhood.

Mayor Bill de Blasio needs to restore basement funding, how are our communities supposed to shelter and feel safe without access to housing. Thank you to our partners at Pratt Center for Community Development

Today we will be advocating against the cuts NYC is making to the Basement Pilot Program. This pilot was promised to the community of East New York when it was rezoned in 2016 as a way to help homeowners convert their basements to legally rentable apartments, and ensure tenants have a safe place to call home with the same rights as any other tenants. The lessons from this pilot are meant to guide the implementation of a citywide program that could bring tens of thousands of legal, safe, affordable housing to neighborhoods across New York City.

We will be using the Hashtag across twitter, Facebook, and Instagram from 11am to 1pm. Additionally, residents in East New York will call their elected officials, the city, and the mayors office to demand the city save the Basement Pilot Program. Join us on any platform and help uplift this campaign, affordable housing, and future of Basement and ADU apartments in NYC.

The infographic is available in Bangla and Spanish in the comments. Follow us on twitter for more graphics, sample tweets, and updates.
