Kalanay - A Tale of the Mountains by Lester Laoagan

Award winning FNWF2025: Judges comments: "What an extraordinary journey. Time travelling through ancient times, to the present and back again, through colonisation and family connections and displacement, and the thematic through it all is the magnificent spirituality connecting culture and nature. ...

A journey through the history of the Igorot peoples of the mountainous region of Cordillerra in the Philippines. Expertly structured and nuanced, it travels through vast times, vast areas, and showcases the relevant culture for each. Commencing in the present, and moving back and often forward again, it contrasts the relationships between many different cultures, and their spirit worlds and their survival. Including colonisation by both the Spanish and the English, and different tribes. A highlight is the spirit world, the connection to nature, and village life. It is a gift to peoples everywhere.

Filipino American History Month - Gathering at Governors Island Remembering Our Living Traditions & Reflecting on Community Resilience — Kinding Sindaw 10/01/2025

Happy Filipino-American History Month!

For context, some of our ancestors were displayed in Human Zoos in St. Louis Missouri in 1904, in Coney Island Luna park in 1905, and around the United States and the World. This is a way for us to educate communities and "change" our history from being Human Zoo displays to cultural ambassadors! Join me and my Austronesian-Filipino Indigenous dance troupe, the Cordillera Cultural Ensemble (www.cordilleraculturalensemble.com) on October 4th at the Flux Factory for the opening of Maureen Catbagan's work entitled, "Alagaan and Salaysay" in Long Island City, Queens, NY @6:00PM and at Governor's Island, Colonel's Row, NY on Sunday, October 5th for the Filipino American History Month - "Remembering Our Living Traditions & Reflecting on Community Resilience" - this is an event from 11AM-5PM, the CCE are performing at 2:30PM. Hello everyone! I’m making 2 personal bold requests.

1. As it turns out, our venue in Edinburgh hasn’t really worked with us with our listing to remkd Audience to bring their ownn phones and our need for internet. So we need to bring as many unlocked smart phones as we can as long as it can scan a QR code. Internet in Edinburgh is unreliable and we need a UK bank account to get specific modems that we need.

2. I am producing two shows through my theater company and we realized that we have more expenses than anticipated. You may donate any amount, no pressure through our venmo or zelle.

We are flying out on Thursday, July 31st in the evening.

If you have an unlocked device or any old smartphone that you can lend us, please let me know.

Please contact me at (347) 687-4380 or [email protected]

Thank you!! 🙏🏼

You will be acknowledged on our website and we do have some perks and exchange of service or items to give. Just contact me.

“This is my second year at the Fringe. I’m from New York City but I’m originally from the Philippines. I’m a performer and I’m also a programme manager for the dance education and family programmes at The Joyce Theatre in New York City.

My first love is dance. I grew up competing in dance since I was a child then it expanded to music, I have a music degree. When I moved to New York in 2007 I got the acting bug so I started attending acting classes. I’ve been teaching artists for more than twenty years.

I’m here at the Fringe to produce two shows. I have one AI immersive show called AI: The Waiting Room - An Immersive Experience. Natalia Yandyganova is the director for that show. My second show is called #40sandsingle, The Early Morning Cabaret Comedy Show. I’m going to do everything in that one. I’m going to do one woman shows with different guests but I’ll mostly play the piano and dance. Sabrina Morabito will be the co director for that show.

One hiccup we’ve had was there was no Wi-Fi at our venue for one of our AI immersive shows. We had to use our personal hotspots so that was very challenging.“
