Exactly a year ago today I was in Kenya with our first Insider Journey of 2022. None of us had had Covid and none of us were vaccinated yet. We had the airplanes, airports, camps and the Serengeti almost entirely to ourselves. And we were rewarded for being among the first to return to safari with incredible sights like these young cubs who had no fear of our vehicles.

Before leaving Saudi and its ancient treasures and heritage sites, I made a trip to , “the country within a country” in the northwest on the Red Sea, where the future is taking shape. It is the largest building project in the world for a “cognitive city” that will house 1 million residents in a car-free, solar powered green zone. The total Neom project is more than 25,000 square kilometers of mountains, deserts and coastline, 95 percent of which will be a nature reserve. The base camp was abuzz with experts from all over the world who are shaping a data-driven, eco-focused community for the future.

I have been lucky to visit amazing textile, jewelry and crafts collections from Iran and Morocco to Mexico and Peru but today in Jeddah, I was floored by a private collection of Saudi traditional fashions that ranks up there with the best in the world. I could have spent hours examining the dozens of rooms of treasures and cannot wait to return with other lovers of things made by hand and full of heritage and talismanic power.

Jeddah and its old town Al Balad dates back to the 7th century. Designated a site in 2014, it contains influences from its role as a port on the spice route and a stop for pilgrims from Asia, Africa and the Middle East on the way to Mecca. Its unusual architecture includes coral stone bricks and wooden “roshan” or enclosed balconies. So much to see in Saudi.

Every year magazine editors scramble to anoint new hotels to their lists of the newest, hottest, most design forward, most innovative etc… Before decided to stick to member and staff travel picks, when I edited the travel magazine for , I did the same fashioning. is sure to make lots of those lists with its photogenic interiors and exteriors, its art installations and great commitment to environmental sustainability. Like all new hotels, (it only opened the first rooms in November), there are some kinks to work out but it has definitely added a new level of sophistication to . Yes there is a pop-up of in with the same exuberant floral theme in London, but it seems even more of a welcome delight in a desert setting. Second photo is the bar which serves delicious mocktails. The pop-up is open this year from December through February. You can see more of the stunning scene in my story.

Centuries seem to collapse in the desert of Al Ula as we drove only a few kilometers from the largest mirrored building in the world to a traditional Bedouin camp for a camel trek and falcon experience.
