Did you know that Brooklyn, like the rest of NYC, is experiencing a "cat crisis"?
Flatbush Cats estimates that there are 500,000+ cats living on the streets across the five boroughs. It's an overpopulation crisis that is invisible to most New Yorkers. Shelters are full. Rescue groups are completely overwhelmed.
Vet care and pet food costs have risen substantially in recent years forcing some in our community to make heart breaking decisions.
Meanwhile other members of our community face kidnapping and deportation. All of this results in an increase in friendly house cats being left behind, in apartments, at vets, on the streets.
How can we come together to help our community members keep their companion animals? How can we confront this crisis with compassion and humanity for those who have far too few options? What are some actions we can all take, and resources we can all access or share?
BRJC is excited to host a workshop with local cat rescuers to discuss the problem, share available resources, and learn existing approaches that rescuers are taking now. The workshop will also feature a discussion on what are the needs-responsive solutions that we can all take individually and collectively to provide compassionate, empathetic support for all living in Bay Ridge.
