The Zelienople Rotary Club was formally organized on February 19, 1924. The formation of the club was set in motion by a letter from attorney James Marshall of Butler to Charles S Passavant III. Charles W White, superintendent of the Orphans Home and Farm School, now Glade Run Lutheran Services, was elected first president of the Zelienople Rotary. The club consisted of 25 original members. The club currently meets every Friday morning at 7:00 am on Zoom. Email the club to request the link. Community and humanitarian work has been carried on through the years. The volunteer work performed by Zelienople Rotarians exemplifies the meaning of "service Above Self," an International Rotary Club motto. Just some of the projects the club has done through the years are listed below
Worked to provide good roads, including Perry Highway (Rt 19), Ellwood City-Zelienople Road (Rt 288) and others in the local area. Sponsor Scout Troops and Youth Baseball teams. Reconstruction of Harpers Dam on the Connoquenessing Creek
Provided community relief during the days of the Great Depression, which continues today with aid to local food banks and other humane organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army, Volunteers Against Abuse, City Mission in New Castle, Shelter Box, and others. Sponsored a fund-raising campaign that eventually provided the Zelienople-Harmony Community with a public park. Rotarians also spent many hours in clearing the land and building the original park. Co-sponsored the honor roll and memorial monuments which pay tribute to the community's military veterans. Funded the building of an addition to Zion Lutheran Church to serve as a storage area for the Southwest Butler County Food Cupboard. Funded and constructed a Community Events sign in the town park at the corner of Main Street and Grandview Avenue. Funded and constructed the Main Street public address speaker system with the assistance of the Zelienople Boro. Provide funding for school supplies at a school in Honduras. Provide dictionaries for local Elementary School students annually. Provide funding for annual scholarships to graduating Seneca Valley students. Today the club continues working with the Community Park Association to provide improvements with the recent installation of new playground equipment. Funding for the club's community and international projects is provided by various fund-raising projects, including two pancake breakfasts annually, Enjoy Book sales, Blood Screening program, co-sponsorship of the Shamrock Shuffle race, among others. In summary, "rotary is an ideal in action." Rotary is the experience of the people of different faiths, different opinions, and different nationalities growing in fellowship wherever they may be. Rotary is a world fellowship of business and professional people who accept the idea of service, individually and collectively, as a basis for success and happiness in business and community life. Closer to home, we should quote one of our charter members, Charles S Passavant III, who said, "Service is the rent we pay to live in a good community." It was true then, and is still true today.
