Hey Hamilton Grange Families,

Our new music program is working with the world's first commercially successful rapper, Kurtis Blow, to raise money to buy instruments for our school.

Please share Kurtis' Go Fund Me page with anyone that you think may be interested in supporting our musicians:

Kurtis attended the elementary school we share the building with and we are hosting his 50 Year School Reunion on October 26 from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. Borough President Gale Brewer will be present as well as New York State Assemblyman Al Taylor. Our kids will get a chance to meet the alumni and some of our students will perform their spoken word poetry.

Thank you for your support!

On Friday, our entire 8th grade hiked to the top of Bear Mountain with all of our 8th grade teachers. It was one more show of unity as our team relied on one another to make the 3.7 mile round trip and enjoy the views from above!

Thanks Mr. Kowles for making this happen!

Big things are happening in the world of Hamilton Grange Debate!

Today, Mason Mercier (703), Mariel Torres (603), and Tayvion Alexander-Santos (602) all served as coaches at the Harlem Incubator Tournament (hosted by Hamilton Grange!) for Novice Parliamentary speakers.

Our students debated the following topics:

- requiring metal detectors in schools
- prohibiting children from using social media, and
- banning plastic bags

Alan Persivale (701), Adair Gonzalez-Sevilla (701), and Chris Puma (701) took home third place in the team competition - this is even more amazing considering this is their first time debating with one another!

William Kelly III (602) took home 6th place in the individual speaker awards, Eidam Ramirez (603) finished 10th, Adair 11th, Chris 16th and Joselyn Valencia (602) 18th, and Alan won Honorable Mention!

but that's not all ...

Jeann Espinal, Jherison Jorge, Adey King, Mason Mercier, Alan Persivale, Hasan Sackor, and Mariel Torres all received scholarships to the Columbia University Harlem Debate Institute this summer. Our students will be honing their debating skills on Columbia's campus this July.

Giant thanks to Mr. Moderno for facilitating today's tournament, and for Mx. Sanchez-Garcia and Ms. Hoa for preparing our students so well for today's tournament!

On Monday, three of our students represented Hamilton Grange at the Brooklyn Regional Poetry Slam at the Brooklyn Public Library.

Spoken Word, an elective class that all students at Hamilton Grange are able to take as part of their regular school day schedule, is led by Ms. Maxie and Ms. Gomez in collaboration with Intikana and Urban Word NYC.

Our poets have been writing and performing all year, and the Brooklyn Regional provided an opportunity for Maxine Pierre-Louis (601), Ladejah Fowler (701), and Alexavier Mejia (703) to show Brooklyn just how talented they are as writers and performers.

We want to congratulate all of our spoken word artist, and those above that had the opportunity to represent us in Brooklyn. The work that you have shared with us this year has been nothing short of incredible - it has inspired us, made us laugh, and sometimes, made us cry, too.

A special congratulations to Alexavier, who rocked Brooklyn, and was selected to compete in the City Championships at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture on May 30. We can't wait for the whole City to see how talented you are Alexavier! Best of luck!

Good morning HG families,

We wanted to share this very exciting news and
send a huge congratulations to two of our 6th graders who were both accepted into the Breakthrough New York (BTNY) Program. BTNY transforms the lives of talented kids by providing educational support from middle school through college and into careers. Their goal is to create leaders who break the cycle of poverty in their families and effect positive change in their communities.

Congratulations to both Maxine Pierre-Louis and Carl Leonard, and their families for the endless love and support you provide for them!

Welcome to BEAM 05/02/2018

Very exciting news Hamilton Grange families, and yet another reason to be proud of our young people...

The mission of Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM) is to create pathways for underserved students to become scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists. Since 2014 we have been trying to partner with this wonderful program.

And now...

We are proud to say that for the first time in the four year history of school, we have had 6 students accepted to the program and 2 students make the wait list!

Congratulations to

Brigid Cupolo-Shorter
Jayson Paulus
Carl Leonard
Kimberly Belduma
Jasly Pichardo
Reyli Sanchez
Johan Sanchez, and
Ani Rodriguez

They will spend 5 weeks this summer taking courses with educators and college professors learning high level math and engaging in fun, problem solving activities. As our students continue as 7th graders, they will spend three weeks of their summer at Bard College, living in the dorms and taking college level classes!

To find out more about BEAM, check them out here:

Welcome to BEAM BEAM asks: what does it really take to help underserved students reach their goals of being a scientist, mathematician, engineer, or programmer? The mission of Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics is to provide a realistic pathway to this goal.

Hey Hamilton Grange Families,

After today, most of our state testing is over and that means our Saturday Academy is ending for 6th and 7th graders, too.

There will be no more Saturday Academy for 6th and 7th graders this year.

8th graders taking the Living Environment and/or Algebra Regents exams will continue with Saturday learning until the exams in June.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi 7th Grade Families,

The Global Learning Collaborative, a school on the Brandeis High School campus at 145 West 84th Street is having an open house on May 16 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Going to an open house gives your child priority admissions to the school.

Admissions are also based on attendance, state test scores and 7th grade average subject average.

While Global Learning Collaborative may not be the best fit for all of our students, it is a solid option that is not too far away from our neighborhood.

We encourage you to attend with your child to keep this school as an option for your child's application next year.

Please RSVP to the Global Learning Collaborative's parent coordinator, Ms. Casillas, at 212-877-1103 or [email protected].

Hey Hamilton Grange Families,

Today, our new Chancellor, Richard Carranza, came to Hamilton Grange Middle School with Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, District 7 City Councilman Mark Levine, and Community Education Council 6 President Johanna Garcia to see all of the wonderful things our students are doing.

On his 5 Borough Tour of the City's Schools, we were selected as the only school he would visit today as he stopped in all 6 of Manhattan's school districts. We were selected because of the amazing progress our kids have made ( #1 in NYS State - 2017/18 Reward School for Progress), the numerous opportunities that our students are afforded in our clubs, athletic teams and extracurricular activities, and the joy that exists in our school.

You can see new footage of the visit on Spectrum NY1 News and on NBC Channel 4 (the NBC piece is airing at either 4, 5, or 6 pm this evening).

We are proud of all of our students and staff but want to give a few special shout outs to those classrooms the Chancellor and elected officials visited:

- Aubrey Camacho, Jady Collazo, and Natalie Moreno for sharing their experience at HGMS in a meeting with the press and the elected officials

- Adair Gonzalez and Hasan Sackor for their amazing debate on a plastic bag ban, and the debate coaches Ms. Hoa, Mx. Sanchez-Garcia, and Mr. Moderno for their support of our debaters this year,

- Class 701 and Ms. Hoa for their close reading of the 6th Amendment and how the Central Park 5 had their 6th amendment rights violated, and

- Class 801 and Ms. Lleras for teaching all of us about comparative embryology

- And last but not certainly least, Ms. Remy, Ms. Diaz, and Ms. Collazo for making our school look amazing!

Great job team!
