🇮🇱 Today in History: The Founding of the Israel Defense Forces 🇮🇱

On May 26, 1948, just days after Israel declared independence, the government established the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), unifying the various Jewish defense organizations into one national military.

Created during one of the most challenging moments in Jewish history, the IDF was tasked with defending the newly reborn Jewish state against multiple invading armies. From its earliest days, the IDF embodied the principle that the Jewish people would never again be defenseless.

For 78 years, the men and women of the IDF have stood on the front lines protecting Israel’s citizens, preserving the nation’s security, and safeguarding the world’s only Jewish state.

Today, we recognize the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of those who have served—and continue to serve—in defense of Israel.
