A statement from the Mayor and Council

The Mayor and Council of the Borough of Glen Rock have taken some time to reflect on the verdict of Derek Chauvin, found guilty on all counts, in the death of George Floyd. As a community, we can feel relief that the case is over, that this one horrific injustice was not met with indifference.

While this verdict provides hope that the legal system can work, the larger challenge still stands before us. We need to address the systemic and implicit biases that negatively impact so many Americans, biases that permeate every community, no matter which state, which city, even in our hamlet of Glen Rock. The task before us is not easy. Eliminating systemic racism in all walks of life will require each of us to be thoughtful and to remain diligent in our efforts to bring about meaningful change.

We are fortunate to have as our Attorney General, a Glen Rock resident, leading the way with revisions to the NJ use-of-force policy which is cited among the best in the nation. “We are starting with the premise that in every interaction, we’re going to respect the person we’re interacting with, the sanctity of their life, their dignity,” Grewal has said. Tangible progress for others to follow.

Real justice can only become reality when we respect the human dignity of every person.”
