The Paumonok Band of The Lepa Wiran Tribe is a sovereign self-governing band of Lenca Indian refugees and descendants currently domiciled in the Unites States of America and Canada due to being displaced from Central America by violence, persecution, famine, industrial deforestation, politics and unjust land tenure.

The Lenca People migrated from what is now known as the nation's of Colombia and Ecuador to Central America. Today, in modern times, the Lenca People land reservations can be found in Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. It is estimated that there are over 450,000 living members currently in Central America alone.
One of the strongest and most well-known humanitarian organizations that represents
The Lenca People today are The Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH)
(Spanish: Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras) is a Honduran organization co-founded by Berta Cáceres in 1993, dedicated to the defense of the environment in Intibucá and the defense of the indigenous Lenca people.
The organization's 2004 history describes how the Lenca began to discover their indigenous face, a face of resistance and national identity. Also in 1994, the organization was affiliated with the Confederation of Autochthonous Peoples of Honduras (CONPAH). In the same year, Lenca activists from the group who wished to work more closely with the government and multilateral institutions created a rival Lenca organization, the National Indigenous Lenca Organization of Honduras (OLINH) according to Wikipedia.
