Love to garden & provide habitat for native creatures? Come join the volunteers at McGolrick Park's native plant garden. We encourage you to come out any time.

In 2014 and 2015, volunteers, along with NYC Audubon and the NYC Parks Dept., planted this .25 acre native garden with 22 species of native plants to enhance the biodiversity of the neighborhood. The plants include things like milkweed & Joe-Pye weed, which the birds & butterflies make the most of, lovely flowers like NY Aster and black-eyed Susans, and some edibles, such as blueberries and raspbe

Thank you to all who have visited this page and helped out in the Urban Oasis community native plant garden over the years. NYC Audubon is no longer managing the garden or volunteer planting and w**ding events, but if you are interested in helping out in the garden and in McGolrick Park in general, please contact Konstancja Maleszynska of the Open Space Alliance North Brooklyn ([email protected]). This page will remain up to serve as a resource for those who are interested in learning more about the plants originally installed in the garden from 2014-2015, but will not be actively managed. Enjoy the birds and the bees!

NYC Audubon Bird Survey of McGolrick Park! 08/31/2016

Join us next week on September 7th (8-9am) for our 5th bird survey in McGolrick Park! Before our surveys began earlier this year, only 11 species of birds had been publicly recorded in the park on eBird.org. Now with the help of volunteers and other organizations working in the park, the list is now up to 33. All those birds depend on quality green spaces in Greenpoint to eat, rest, and nest!

Join NYC Audubon next week on Tuesday, July 12 at 8:00am for our next bird survey in McGolrick Park! The Urban Oasis native plant garden is in bloom and these surveys funded by the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund will help contribute important information about which birds are using the park and the native plants in the garden. We'll likely see American robins, fish crows, and other birds nesting in and around the park.

We’ll be meeting at the southwest corner of the park at Driggs Ave. & Russell St. Bring binoculars if you have them, but beginners are welcome! Rain date is Wednesday, July 13.
To register or for more information about this and upcoming surveys, please email [email protected].

Weeds - dig 'em up! 06/16/2016

They may look pretty, but thistles are w**ds that can establish very quickly. They are very prickly so use gloves! These need to be cut down at the base repeatedly to exhaust the resources of the root system. If you try pulling them and don't get the entire root, it can split and create additional plants!
