With watercolor as her primary medium, Marian Howard has an expert knack for capturing poignant slices of African-American life. Her wispy, sepia-toned vignettes make miracles out of everyday occurrences. Her ‘Having A Meal’ blends watercolor and pencil and features a portrait of young boy having himself a snack.

One half of the ultra-innovative painting duo TWIN with his twin brother Jerry, Terry Lynn is also an accomplished painter all on his own. His 2013 “Golden”, a hand-embellished glicee-on-canvas, is a simple yet powerful portrait of a young black girl. The patriotic color palette and flag-adorned tank top she is featured in give it a forceful American symbolism.

A theme running through the majority of John Holyfield’s work is black upward mobility. More often than not, the black subjects of his work are placed in comfortable settings. “Golf Tales” is a prime example. The linchpin of a series of pieces focused on golf, the 2017 oil-on-canvas captures in time a conversation between three black men, dressed to the nines, casually enjoying a day on the links.
