Metamorphic variability and mica content in gravestones.
We would need to examine the stone under magnification to better understand its mineral composition. These are my observations. Stone has natural textural and reflective variations. Slate, phyllite, and schist represent progressively higher grades of metamorphism, and a single gravestone can exhibit variations in mineral composition, texture, and foliation that reflect its geological history.
On Lucy Proctor's headstone, there are relatively smooth areas with tiny flecks of mica, alongside large, heavily textured areas where the entire surface shimmers in the light.

native Standley Goodwin helped send astronauts to the moon. Back home in Marblehead, he spent hours on the grass at Old Burial Hill, waiting for sunlight to reveal letters worn into centuries-old stone.

He raced model yachts at Redd’s Pond for more than 60 years, lived nearly his whole life in the same house and quietly helped preserve the town’s history. He died Monday at 88.

We spoke with his sister and the people who knew him through the pond, the museum and the burial hill. Their stories reveal a man who gave extraordinary care to the things he loved.
