Thank you to Newport News Treasurer Sanu Dieng-Cooper and Jondahlyn Holston of Transitions Family Violence Services for an insightful fireside chat this evening in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
One important takeaway was the intersection between domestic violence and homelessness. For many individuals and families, escaping an abusive situation can mean leaving behind their home, financial stability, and support system. No one should have to choose between their safety and having a place to call home.
Conversations like these are important because awareness is the first step toward prevention. We must continue educating our community, recognizing the warning signs of abuse, supporting survivors, and ensuring that safe housing and resources are available to those seeking a way out.
Thank you to Transitions Family Violence Services for the critical work you do to protect and empower families in our community.
Everyone deserves to feel safe, especially in their own home.
