The final in our series of 6 sketch programs was held in late August at the Joyce House in Snyder, in the rugged landscape of southwest Oklahoma. The owners of the house are David and Allison Ayers, who also were our event sponsor. David’s mother Janine was there to greet us and was the perfect host. She lives in the home next door (the original home of the Nordstrom Family). The Docent was Andrew Stone, who provided a great background on the home with images on his laptop. The house, which has an octagon-shaped floor plan, was designed by Herb Greene and built in 1961.
The Nordstrom family owned and operated the Rosevelt Rock Quarry which was literally a stone’s throw away from their home. They quarried Sierra pink granite which was used for the floors of the Joyce house and the Prairie House. One of their daughters, Evylyn, and her husband commissioned Herb Greene to design and build the Joyce house that was adjacent to her parents’ home.
The art instruction was a recap of the previous lessons with an emphasis of the 3 step process of drawing by observation; observe/analyze and plan/sketch. Instructor, Fred Schmidt, took the opportunity to remind sketchers that when sketching on-site, by observation, you experience not only the subject in person but also the day; the conditions, the smells, and the changing light. This drawing experience provides a distinct memory that provides a connection to the place. Drawing what you see with all your senses engaged is a deeper and more memorable experience than just observation alone. Your memory of a place is intensified through this level of interaction, making your experience more indelible and lasting.
We heartily thank Fred Fred Schmidt and Norman Firehouse Art Center for partnering with us on this sketch series and look forward to doing another in the future!
