Friendly competition builds winning teams!

This week, Soldiers across the took a break from their high-paced training schedule to compete in the unitโ€™s Commanderโ€™s Cup and memorial hockey game in an effort to find who had the grit and skills to take home a victory.

During Tribe Week, battalions competed in ultimate frisbee, flag football, tug-of-war, a 1,000-lb club, and a memorial hockey game in honor of Sgt. 1st Class Michael A. Cathcart, building cohesive teams and esprit de corps across the formation.

Who do you think walked away as champions?

Yesterday, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) honored the life of Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller during the Groupโ€™s annual Robbie Miller Memorial 5K. We gathered to honor his legacy and courage in the face of danger.

Robbie embodied the warrior spirit, putting his team and mission above all. In doing so, Robbie paid the ultimate sacrifice in dedication to his nation.

The event ensures the memories of our fallen live on in our hearts and minds forever.

โ€As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter the words, but to live by them.โ€ โ€” John F. Kennedy

We don't forget our own.

On Monday, May 18th, 3rd Special Forces Group will gather for the annual SSG Robert J. Miller Memorial 5K. We run to honor the legacy of a Green Beret who gave everything for his team and his nation.

Soldiers, families, and friends are invited to attend and pay tribute to Robbie at the 3rd Special Forces Group Headquarters.

On January 25th, 2008, while conducting a combat reconnaissance patrol through the Gowardesh Valley, Staff Sergeant Miller and his small element engaged a force of 15 to 20 insurgents occupying prepared fighting positions. While leading a small squad forward to conduct a battle damage assessment, a large, well-coordinated insurgent force initiated a near ambush.

With total disregard for his own safety, Robbie called for his men to quickly move back to covered positions as he charged the enemy over exposed ground and under overwhelming enemy fire in order to provide protective fire for his team. Ignoring his wound, he continued to push the fight, moving to draw fire from over one hundred enemy fighters upon himself.

SSG Millerโ€™s heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty, and at the cost of his own life.

On October 6th, 2010, SSG Miller was posthumously awarded our nationโ€™s highest award for heroism and valor; the Presidential Medal of Honor.
