♻️ WHEN MAINE’S LANDFILLS FILL UP, WHERE WILL OUR TRASH GO?

The trash we throw away has to go somewhere—and landfill space is limited.

Maine’s landfills have different amounts of remaining capacity. One major concern is Juniper Ridge Landfill in Old Town, which Maine DEP projects will reach its currently licensed capacity in 2028 at current filling rates. A proposed expansion remains under review. That date applies to Juniper Ridge, not every landfill in Maine.

🚛 What happens when a landfill is full?
Trash must go to another permitted facility with available capacity. If Maine cannot provide enough disposal capacity, more waste could have to travel out of state—or potentially to Canada. Maine already sends some waste to facilities in New Hampshire and Canada. Longer hauling distances can mean higher costs for communities and residents. There is no single guaranteed destination for all future trash.

🌎 This is why recycling matters NOW.
Keeping recyclable and compostable materials out of the trash helps preserve landfill space, recover valuable materials, and reduce the amount we pay to dispose of. Maine DEP identifies cardboard and food waste among the common recoverable materials still being thrown away.

At Norway-Paris Solid Waste, please do your part:

✅ Separate accepted cardboard, paper, glass, metals, and plastics.
✅ Keep recyclables clean and follow posted sorting instructions.
✅ Use available composting options for accepted food scraps.
✅ Reuse or donate usable items.
✅ Ask our staff when you are unsure where something belongs.

A few minutes spent sorting today helps protect Maine’s disposal capacity for tomorrow.

♻️ Recycling Makes Cents—for our communities, our wallets, and Maine’s future.
