October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), an annual recognition of the positive impact of people with disabilities in the American workforce. This yearly event began in 1945 as a weeklong national observance of the contributions of people with physical disabilities.

New Leaf is proud to be an employer of adults with disabilities, and to be a member of the SourceAmerica and AbilityOne non-profit network. Together they help provide employment to differently-abled Americans throughout the country. We are proud to do our part.

SourceAmerica recently reported that 81% of employees have been with the program for more than one year, and 59% for five years or more. This week New Leaf commemorates two notable anniversaries: Mona of our day janitorial crew reached 25 years with New Leaf and Gary of our commissary shelf stocking crew reached 15 years! Congrats Mona and Gary and thank you for your years of hard work!!

What an amazing week at the SourceAmerica Grassroots Advocacy Conference! It was an interesting and informative trip and a great opportunity to connect with our government representatives and NPA partners. Had a blast touring DC too!

The 34th Annual Whidbey Island Challenge Series Downhill Challenge was a blast! We got some decent weather (close call) and saw some great racers. Huge shout out to the North Whidbey Island Sunrise Rotary for putting on another great racing event for children and youth with special needs. Tackling that Barrington Avenue hill is an adventure. We were glad to be a part of it and help tow the cars back uphill.

There's a reason we have our annual Employee Appreciation Picnic in mid-August: because coincides with National Bad Poetry Day! (Or maybe it's because the weather is virtually guaranteed to be beautiful.) Well in any case we got a great day and had a blast being together. In fact...

We gathered for corndogs and soda to sip
While tossing co****le bags with excellent zip
Then we got shaved ice, all frosty and sweet
And together we called it a picnic complete
