At Broad Ford School, leaders are learners, and learning starts with curiosity! Their Word of the Week initiative introduces a new vocabulary word each week to students in Pre-K through sixth grade. Each word is introduced and unpacked during morning announcements, with a picture clue and motion to help students understand, remember, and use the word. Words are also displayed throughout the hallways and cafeteria, and are incorporated into daily conversations and learning. These words are shared with families to encourage practice at home, sometimes including special assignments and homework. Having a shared vocabulary across all grade levels creates a unique sense of connection and builds a schoolwide culture of learning.
Bobcats are truly flourishing as they put words like curious, scrumptious, impeccable, wander, and persuade into action! It is pretty amazing to hear a Pre-K student describe a scrumptious lunch or brag about their impeccable hallway behavior. These moments show that students are doing more than memorizing definitions. They are expanding their vocabulary, strengthening communication skills, and building confidence. By learning to express ideas, ask questions, and persuade others, students are developing skills that will help them become strong leaders and lifelong learners. Broad Ford School remains committed to growing vocabulary, growing confidence, and growing leaders, one word at a time!
