Because it’s the 50th anniversary of Frameline, the programmers are screening some golden oldies in the q***r canon, some of which played at Frameline and others that didn’t. Allegra Madsen, Executive Director of Frameline, was asked if she saw any common themes among the films screening this year.

“The films in Frameline50 are doing two things at once,” she told film writer Brian Bromberger. “They are imagining q***r futures we don’t have the language for yet, and they are bearing witness, documenting a revolution as it happens in real time. Those two impulses live right next to each other this year.”

Kate Bove, Frameline’s Associate Director of Programs, commented on the connections between such a diverse slate of films.

“At a time when art is being censored, controlled, and consolidated, we’re proud to uplift LGBTQ+ films from all over the world that showcase a q***ring of convention, form, and narrative in bold and authentic ways,” she said.
