A MESSAGE FROM BCRO CHAIRMAN VINCENT M. DURANTE...
Election Day 2026
“A Time for Choosing” Ronald Reagan • October 27, 1964
In a few days, we will once again exercise our right to vote and fulfill our civic duty to choose how our country, state, and county will be led for the next two to six years.
It’s been 62 years since Ronald Reagan delivered this speech in support of Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign.
At that time, communism was on the rise, we were becoming increasingly involved in Vietnam, and the threat of a nuclear attack was always on everyone’s mind.
Sixty-two years have passed so what has changed? Communism, under the guise of democratic socialism, is at Bergen County’s doorstep—just a quick crossing of the Hudson away. Nuclear threats from the Middle East, wars in Ukraine and the Persian Gulf, as well as unrest in many major European cities are also of concern.
• Here at home, Bergen County faces many challenges. More than 12 years of one-party control and Bergen taxpayers still aren’t getting their fair share. Bergen County sends enormous tax dollars to Democrat-controlled Trenton, yet Democrat county leadership has not made securing Bergen’s fair share of state funding a defining priority. From infrastructure to state aid, Bergen deserves a County Executive and Commissioners who will fight for Bergen first—not simply accept whatever pennies Trenton’s bosses send back.
• Development without accountability is not progress. Bergen County is under enormous development pressure. Democrat county leadership should demand that new development be matched by adequate roads, transportation, schools, utilities, and infrastructure while pushing back against Democrat policies causing significant overdevelopment in our communities. Instead, taxpayers are left asking whether growth is being planned around the needs of existing residents—or simply around the next development proposal.
• Bergen families deserve a stronger voice on school funding. School funding remains one of the biggest drivers of property taxes in Bergen County, and the state continues to make major changes to the distribution of school aid. County leadership should have used its political influence to demand a fairer deal for Bergen’s taxpayers and school districts.
• A rubber stamp is not oversight. The County Executive proposes the budget; the Commissioners are supposed to scrutinize it. Yet year after year, Bergen continues to approve substantial operating and capital spending. Taxpayers are entitled to ask a simple question: What are we getting for our money?
• The county’s own records show millions in new appropriations, bonding, and capital commitments. Over $8 million of your tax dollars were spent on a project that was never built! Bergen needs Commissioners who will challenge spending, demand measurable results, and say NO when the numbers don’t make sense, and not simply vote yes because their own party leadership put it on the agenda.
November 3rd offers a clear choice: more of the same, or leadership that puts Bergen County’s taxpayers first. Choose accountability, responsible development, fair funding, and meaningful oversight. Make your voice heard, Vote Column 1on November 3rd.
