This morning, in Palmer, Alaska, a “grassroots”campaign rally was held for my opponent, the incumbent Rep. Nick Begich. This event, advertised as invite-only, was held in a hangar at Palmer Municipal Airport, though flyers they posted weeks in advance insisted the location would be “confidential”and would only be revealed to supporters who RSVPed. Although the event featured an appearance by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA), this rally’s use of “security” measures like ID checks, bag checks, media restrictions, and secret location enforceable by invite requirement were not only completely unnecessary, but also arguably very shady.

If your goal is truly to connect with Alaskan voters and to try and be the Representative they really need, what good does it do to never answer your constituents’ calls, speak at rallies whose locations are kept secret, and only meet with wealthy donors who can give you financial support?

Unless, of course, the wealthy donors giving financial support are who you actually Represent, and not the regular Alaskan people.
