Community volunteers to plant over 100 native trees in Omaha parks (Please note: this event is private and NOT open to the public.)

Omaha, NE – On Saturday, October 24, local nonprofit Keep Omaha Beautiful, Inc. will conduct a tree planting event in Adams Park and Fontenelle Park with approximately 75 volunteers from the community. Volunteers will work in teams to plant 112 native shade trees. In addition, Keep Omaha Beautiful (KOB) and its partners will conduct fall plantings in other areas of Omaha including along streets, in parks, and on school grounds, totaling 268 trees planted this fall season.

The tree planting event in Adams and Fontenelle Parks is made possible by funding from The Big Grove Foundation and the Nebraska Environmental Trust.

The October 24 tree planting event is part of the Trees for Tomorrow program, a public-private partnership of Keep Omaha Beautiful, the City of Omaha’s Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Urban Planning Departments, as well as private donors. Since starting its tree-planting initiatives in 2018, KOB’s tree programs have added over 5,000 trees throughout over 100 public spaces to date. Read more about Trees for Tomorrow and the history of KOB’s tree canopy improvement initiatives at http://TreesforTomorrow.info

The goal of the Trees for Tomorrow program is to strengthen and expand Omaha’s tree canopy to make our city more resilient to environmental changes and future pests. Trees provide benefits to our entire community, including:

Helping to combat high temperatures
Mitigating stormwater runoff
Improving air quality
Boosting mental and physical health

Keep Omaha Beautiful tree plantings bring people together to make a difference. “Planting trees with the community gives us a sense of purpose beyond ourselves,” says KOB Tree Program Director, Emily Hergenrader. “ “Planting trees not only benefits the environment – it’s also a way to show up for our community, and improve the future we all share. These small acts, done together, are what shape a stronger, more connected Omaha.”

It is going to be a cold night/morning. Please take the necessary precautions.

Looks like many areas will see their first freeze of the season tonight, with potential for a hard freeze in some spots. If you have sensitive plants or exposed pipes that may be damaged, take care of them before you head to bed tonight!

We know that many residents in Omaha experienced damages from the widespread flood earlier this month. What you may not know, though, is that one of our members – Drew Gerken – started a non-profit 13 years ago to help provide furniture and household items to families that need them here in Omaha! The Furniture Project has helped thousands of people since then, and continues to do so!

Now, The Furniture Project is collaborating with the city of Omaha and social service agencies to help families here locally impacted by floods! You can help out as well – if you have furniture (specifically small dining tables, chest of drawers, lamps, mattresses, rugs, or box springs and/or metal bed frames) or are able to donate from TFP’s Amazon wish list, please help out!! You can find out all the info here: https://www.thefurnitureproject.org/flood-relief-2026

If you’re in need of items, you can be helped by The Furniture Project by working with your case manager or referring agency to access services and support! Once again, more information is available at the link above for how to access this support!!

This is what we love about Omaha – we help each other, we support each other, and we look after each other when disaster strikes.

Stay safe, Omaha, and help each other if you can!
