Yesterday, the Texas State Board of Education made a decision that should concern every Texas parent, educator, and community member.
After hours of testimony from Muslim students, parents, and advocates pleading with the Board to reconsider, an 8–4 vote, including our very own Julie Pickren, moved forward a rewritten social studies curriculum that repeatedly frames Islam through slavery, conquest, violence, and conflict while presenting Christianity in a substantially more positive light.
That is not balanced history.
And this concern does not stop with the Muslim community.
The proposed standards raise serious questions about how we teach the histories of Muslims, Palestinians, African Americans, Mexican Americans, Indigenous peoples, nontraditional families, and other communities whose stories deserve accuracy, not selective or judgmental framing.
We can teach the difficult parts of history without reducing entire religions, cultures, or communities to their darkest moments.
If we are going to teach slavery, teach the systems that created it.
If we are going to teach conquest, teach the full context.
If we are going to teach conflict, teach the treaties, cooperation, resistance, contributions, and peaceful periods too.
Our children deserve an education that teaches them to think critically, understand people who may be different from them, and become well-rounded members of society. I know I want my kids to go through life with an open heart and embrace everyone, regardless of their background.
Texas students and educators deserve better than history filtered through ideology.
Teach the whole story.
Teach it accurately.
Teach it fairly.
