SENTENCING DAY: WHAT WILL CALEB FLYNN'S PUNISHMENT BE?
Today, Caleb Flynn will walk back into a Miami County, Ohio courtroom — but this time, the question isn't whether he's guilty.
A jury has already answered that.
On September 29, jurors deliberated for only about 2½ hours before finding the 40-year-old former worship pastor and American Idol contestant guilty on all nine counts, including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence in the killing of his wife, 37-year-old Ashley Flynn. He now faces the possibility of life in prison without parole.
Prosecutors said Ashley was shot twice in the back of the head while she slept inside the couple's Tipp City home on February 16. They argued Caleb then staged the scene to resemble a home invasion and claimed an intruder had killed his wife. Their two daughters were home that night.
But perhaps some of the most chilling evidence came from Caleb's own communications.
The night before Ashley was killed, prosecutors said he messaged his mistress:
“I choose you. I'm free. Actions will come tomorrow.”
His mistress, Alleigha Botner, testified that their affair began after they met when she was a young intern at his church. Jurors heard about more than 100,000 messages exchanged between them. Months before Ashley's death, Caleb had even written about staying awake until 4 a.m. thinking of ways to kill his wife without going to jail.
And there is another layer to this case that is difficult to ignore.
Years earlier, when Caleb appeared on American Idol, he spoke publicly about how Ashley had encouraged him to pursue his dream. Prosecutors would later argue that by 2026 he wanted his marriage over — without losing the life, reputation, career and family that came with it.
His defense maintained that the case against him was circumstantial and argued investigators never produced evidence showing Caleb actually fired the weapon. The murder weapon was never recovered. Caleb continues to maintain his innocence, and his attorney has indicated an appeal is planned.
Today, however, Caleb Flynn isn't awaiting a verdict.
He's awaiting his punishment.
His sentencing is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET today.
