North Korea has reportedly conducted a test launch of two cruise missiles from a submarine. The test highlights Pyongyang’s efforts to develop its sea-based strike capabilities, potentially making missile launches more difficult to detect.

Submarine-launched missiles are attracting attention because submarines can operate covertly beneath the ocean’s surface. However, details about the missile types, range, and test results still require confirmation.

What could this mean for security in East Asia?

USS Abraham Lincoln Finally Returns Home, Concluding Long Mission Amidst Iran Conflict The U.S. Navy’s massive aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), has finally arrived back at its home port in San Diego, California, after completing one of its longest deployments.

Carrying approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines, the carrier spent nearly 11 months (about 322 days) at sea, setting a record of 265 consecutive days without a port call. This extended deployment involved participation in U.S. military operations across the Middle East.

The mission drew significant international attention. Beyond successfully deterring threats and securing strategic waters, the crew faced grueling challenges—ranging from logistical issues regarding food supplies at sea to the mental strain caused by repeated extensions of their deployment.

Despite the challenges, the atmosphere at the port was filled with emotion and joy as families welcomed the service members home, marking the end of one of the U.S. Navy's most exhausting deployment chapters in recent years.

The United States and North Korea have very different military strengths.

🇺🇸 UNITED STATES
• Large, technologically advanced military
• Global air and naval reach, including aircraft carriers and nuclear-powered submarines
• Advanced fighter aircraft, long-range bombers, satellites, intelligence and missile-defense systems
• Nuclear triad: land-based missiles, ballistic-missile submarines and strategic bombers
• 2025 military spending: about $954 billion, according to SIPRI.

🇰🇵 NORTH KOREA
• Large standing military with a major concentration of forces on the Korean Peninsula
• Extensive artillery and short- and medium-range missile forces
• Developing long-range ballistic missiles, including ICBMs capable of threatening targets far beyond the Korean Peninsula
• Possesses a nuclear weapons program and continues to develop missile delivery systems.
• Uses asymmetric capabilities to offset weaknesses in conventional military technology and equipment.

⚠️ KEY DIFFERENCE:
The U.S. has broad global military capabilities and advanced conventional forces, while North Korea places significant emphasis on missiles, nuclear deterrence, artillery and asymmetric capabilities.

Kearsarge (LHD-3) vs USS Boxer (LHD-4)

USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) was commissioned Oct 16, 1993, homeported in Norfolk, VA. USS Boxer (LHD-4) was commissioned Feb 11, 1995, homeported in San Diego, CA.

Same Wasp-class design - ∼41,000 tons, 844 ft, capacity for ∼1,200 crew + 1,800 Marines. Both have completed F-35B upgrades.

Difference: Atlantic vs Pacific fleet. Identical role, different home.

U.S. Congressional Report Reveals 81 Military Aircraft Lost or Damaged in Iran Conflict

WASHINGTON — A newly released nonpartisan report from the Congressional Research Service (CRS) has revealed that the U.S. military has lost or sustained damage to at least 81 aircraft since the onset of operations against Iran.

The comprehensive tally, updated in early October, covers fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems (drones) involved in operations since late February. According to defense analysts, the total cost of these equipment losses and associated damages runs into billions of dollars.

The losses encompass a wide range of military assets, including high-end fighter jets, surveillance platforms, search-and-rescue helicopters, and a significant number of reconnaissance drones (such as MQ-9 Reapers).

Defense officials clarify that the figure of 81 includes both completely destroyed airframes and those that suffered light-to-moderate damage from combat operations or regional missile strikes, with some subsequently repaired and returned to service.

The ongoing conflict has raised broader questions within defense circles regarding the capacity of the U.S. defense industrial base to rapidly replace advanced aerospace hardware while maintaining strategic readiness globally.

The Pentagon has yet to release a single comprehensive public accounting detailing every individual incident, as operational updates continue to evolve amidst ongoing security developments in the Middle East

Russia vs NATO: How Do Their Military Strengths Compare?
Russia and NATO remain among the most powerful military forces in the world, but their capabilities differ significantly.

- Defense spending: NATO’s 32 members collectively spent about $1.58 trillion on military expenditure in 2025, compared with Russia’s estimated $190 billion, according to SIPRI.

- Nuclear forces: Both Russia and several NATO members possess nuclear weapons, making strategic deterrence a central factor.

- Conventional forces: NATO has a major advantage in combined economic resources, air power, naval capabilities and global logistics, while Russia maintains large ground forces, extensive missile capabilities and a substantial nuclear arsenal.

- Industrial capacity: NATO countries collectively have a much larger defense-industrial and economic base, while Russia has expanded military production significantly in recent years.

Bottom line: Military strength cannot be measured by one number alone. Geography, readiness, logistics, technology, industrial capacity and nuclear deterrence all play important roles.

🇮🇷iran
• Around 610,000 active personnel plus approximately 220,000 paramilitary personnel
• About 551 aircraft
• Significant capabilities in missiles, drones and regional military operations
• Geography and large regional manpower are important factors in Iran's defense posture.

🇺🇸🇷🇺🇹🇷 Russia–Turkey S-400 Issue Remains in Focus

Russia’s relationship with Turkey continues to draw attention over Ankara’s acquisition of the S-400 air-defense system.

Turkey received the first S-400 equipment from Russia in 2019, a move that created major tensions with the United States and contributed to Turkey’s removal from the F-35 program.

The S-400 issue remains part of the broader security relationship between Moscow, Ankara, Washington, and NATO, while Turkey continues to maintain ties with both Russia and its NATO allies.

🔥 One missile system, major geopolitical consequences.
