For : The Whitehall Bridge was built in 1792 when the village of Chalfont was called Whitehallville. (The town bore the names of Butler’s Mill, Barndtsville, Whitehallville and Kungle’s Tavern before finally being named Chalfont, after the town in England where William Penn is buried.) The span over the Neshaminy Creek was known as the Chalfont Bridge when it was rebuilt in 1840. This covered bridge was 160’ in length, constructed of oak, and unique with windows along the span. It crossed the creek near the intersection with today’s Route 152-south, “a pretty good place for fishing, skating and swimming. A footbridge was built along the side after parents expressed concern with school children having to walk through the bridge. They felt ‘speeding’ teams were a hazard.” The old covered bridge was demolished and replaced with a concrete bridge in 1924.
