Philadelphia Fire Department The Philadelphia Fire Department provides firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS). Dial 911

One of the oldest fire departments in the United States, the Philadelphia Fire Department began as the volunteer Union Fire Company, established on Dec. 7, 1736. After 134 years, the City Council decided the growing city needed a professional fire department, and passed a December 1870 ordinance to create one. The department began service as a fully paid city department on March 15, 1871. Today, the Philadelphia Fire Department provides firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS) for the nation's 6th-largest city.

Tomorrow (10/15) at 10 a.m., the Philadelphia Fire Department will visit the University City neighborhood where Tuesday’s tragic fire claimed the life of one person and injured one of our own firefighters.

Our commitment to this community extends beyond responding to emergencies. We want to help you take steps to protect your home, your family, and yourself from the dangers of fire.
If you live in the area, please stop by, say hello to our members, and learn how to develop a fire safety and escape plan for your home.

Need smoke alarms? Call 311 and submit a request. PFD members will install them in your home for free.

This week we're proud to celebrate two PFD members who went above and beyond in showing dedicated service: Congratulations to Firefighter Joshua Pagan and Paramedic Lieutenant Daniel Fields.

FF Pagan was named as the 2026 Firefighter of the Year. In March, FF Pagan was working with Engine 54 inside a burning home when the floor they were standing on collapsed. While several members were trapped and injured, FF Pagan immediately got himself free and began helping others to safety. Paramedic Lt. Daniel Fields was first recognized as the 2026 EMS Provider of the Year during EMS Week in May of this year. He was selected because of his leadership and quick response which saved a choking child's life.

A huge shoutout to Fireman's Hall Museum and the PFD Historical Corporation for honoring these brave heroes and providing their awards.
