Today marks 25 years since the attacks on September 11, 2001. I vividly remember that Tuesday morning, preparing to go to the dentist, when both my phone rang and pager went off – both at the same time – which is never a good sign.

At the time, I was the Assistant Chief over the Patrol Division. The Phoenix Police Department was immediately placed on Tactical Alert.

A lot changed in the days, weeks, and years after the event. Even though the horror and hardship happened in New York, the pain resonated across the country, and brought our nation and neighbors closer together.

The attacks on 9/11 changed the course of our country and the world, and it's important that we never forget those attacks. We must remember to never forget; I know I will never forget.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of George Dean, who dedicated his life advocating for civil rights, housing and education access and investing back into his community.

During my time in the police department, I worked closely with George, and always admired his leadership and loyalty to Phoenix.

My condolences to Eula, Theresa, Nathaniel and the grandsons as well as his friends. Phoenix will always be inspired by your work.
