Tuesday Tip: Did a bank just reject your power of attorney? Here's why that keeps happening.

This week a family called us heartbroken. The bank had turned down a power of attorney that was signed a few years ago, and they asked us to come out and notarize it again.

We couldn't. Another notary did that notarization, and only that notary can speak for it. In this case the attorney has retired and the witnesses can't be found, so there's no one left who can stand behind the document. That's hard news to give a family, and it's why I made this video.

What changed in January 2020
Since January 1, 2020, Florida law (Section 117.05(4), Florida Statutes) has required every notary block to say whether the signer appeared by physical presence or by online notarization. A document missing that wording, or missing any other required piece of the notary block, can be refused.

What to do now
✔️ If you or a loved one has a power of attorney, pull it out and read the notary block.
✔️ Check for the "physical presence or online notarization" wording and the full notary block.
✔️ If anything is missing or outdated, have the document redone now, while everyone who needs to sign is still available.
✔️ Writing your own documents? Learn the current statutes first. The rules change, and some preparers haven't caught up.

A power of attorney matters most at a hard moment, so make sure yours will be accepted when your family needs it.

572 pages, four closings, one appointment, and one of my favorite clients. ✍️

Today we wrapped up four loan closings in a single signing, and every page was reviewed, signed, initialed, and notarized with care. Once everything was complete, we scanned the full package and sent it straight to the loan officer's team so they could keep all four files moving without delay.

💼 One week it's a conference table with a busy CEO. The next, it's a beach wedding at sunset 💍🌅, or a quiet hospital bedside 🕊️. This work has shown me every side of life.

As notaries, we're invited into people's highest moments and their lowest ones. We sit with executives closing big deals ✍️. We stand beside couples as they make forever promises 💕. And we sit with families at a loved one's bedside, helping them finish that last paperwork so they can focus on saying goodbye 🙏.

My team and I talk about this all the time. It keeps us grounded. At the end of the day, material things just don't matter.
