The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District manages 22 locks and dams in the region, which are key to ensuring commodities can move reliably throughout the nation's waterways year-round. Barges are one of the best methods to move those bulk commodities - and there are numbers to prove it:
- Barges move cargo 675 miles per gallon of fuel, making them the most fuel-efficient bulk transport mode
- Dry cargo: one barge = 16 rail cars or 70 trucks
- Liquid cargo: one barge = 46 rail cars or 144 trucks
- Barge transport reduces CO2 emissions by 90% compared to trucks and 30% compared to rail
- The Great Lakes handle 175 million tons of commodities annually (the Ohio River alone carries 35 percent of the country’s waterborne commerce)
- For every $20 spent moving cargo by truck, $1 is spent moving cargo by barge
