Plainfield Fire recently hosted the final practicals for our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

CERT is a nationally recognized program developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that trains community members in basic emergency preparedness and disaster response skills. Volunteers learn how to assist themselves, their families, and their neighbors during emergencies when first responders may be delayed due to the size and scope of an incident.

Through CERT training, participants gain hands-on knowledge in:
• Disaster preparedness
• Fire safety and utility control
• Basic disaster medical operations
• Light search and rescue
• Team organization and communication
• Emergency response coordination

CERT members do not replace professional firefighters, law enforcement officers, or EMS personnel. Instead, they serve as a valuable support resource by assisting with community preparedness efforts, public education, disaster response, and recovery operations under the direction of our local Plainfield Emergency Management Agency.

🍂🎃 Keep Fall Decorations Fun — and Fire Safe! 🎃🍂

Fall decorations can make your home feel festive, but some can also create fire hazards. Keep decorations away from heat sources, open flames and exits, and never block doors or escape routes. If you're using candles, consider flameless alternatives and always keep them away from anything that can burn.

As you decorate for the season, take a few extra seconds to make sure your fall décor doesn't create a fire risk. Keep it festive. Keep it safe

🔒 October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

Your personal information is valuable — to you and to cybercriminals. 🕵️‍♂️

This month, take a few minutes to strengthen your digital defenses:
💻 Update your software. Turn on automatic updates for devices and apps.

🔑 Use strong passwords. Better yet, use a password manager.
📱 Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). It’s like locking your door and setting the alarm.
🚨 Think before you click. Don’t fall for suspicious links or attachments.

Preparedness isn’t just about storms — it’s also about protecting yourself online! 🌐

With the weather getting colder, homeowners need to evaluate their furnace. Home furnace maintenance involves keeping the system clean, efficient, and safe before and during the heating season. Key steps include replacing or cleaning air filters regularly, clearing dust from around the furnace, ensuring vents and registers are unobstructed, and checking the thermostat for proper function. It’s also important to inspect the blower, belts, and electrical connections for wear, listen for unusual noises, and schedule a professional tune-up annually to verify safe ignition, gas or electrical components, and overall system performance
