TRAIL TOWN THURSDAY: LA GRANDE 🎬

📍A film conceived in La Grande came home to the community that helped bring it to life.

✍️Written and directed by H. Nelson Tracey, Breakup Season was developed through the Eastern Oregon Filmmaker Residency and filmed entirely in La Grande during the winter of 2023. The independent holiday film stars Chandler Riggs, Samantha Isler, James Urbaniak, Brook Hogan, Carly Stewart and Jacob Wysocki.

🎭Following its hometown screening at the 2024 Eastern Oregon Film Festival, an Oregon Film Trail marker was unveiled in downtown La Grande, celebrating the film and the community behind it.

👀Find the sign on Adams Avenue and explore more Oregon filming locations with SetJetters .

🗺️While you’re in town, explore downtown La Grande’s cafés, shops and art spaces, then head just two miles from down town to Mount Emily Recreation Area for trails and sweeping views of the Grande Ronde Valley. Film lovers can plan a visit October 15–17, 2026, when the 17th annual Eastern Oregon Film Festival brings independent films, live music and filmmakers to downtown La Grande.

TRAIL TOWN THURSDAY | ATHENA 🎬🌾

Nearly a century ago, the wheat fields outside Athena became a movie set for City Girl, directed by legendary silent-film filmmaker F.W. Murnau and starring Mary Duncan and Charles Farrell.

Filmed near Athena in 1928 and released in 1930, City Girl brought a 72-person production company to a farm at Thorn Hollow. Local residents appeared in the film and supplied farm equipment, two combine harvesters and 80 mules for its sweeping harvest scenes. During filming, Mary Duncan was also named queen of the 1928 Pendleton Round-Up.

Today, Athena’s connection to the film lives on at the restored Gem Theatre, where you’ll find the City Girl mural and an Oregon Film Trail marker.

Oregon’s silent-film history is also taking center stage in Cottage Grove this weekend. On August 28 and 29, the community is marking 100 years since Buster Keaton and his crew came to town to film The General with a weekend of art, music, history and a special centennial screening.

From Athena’s wheat fields to Cottage Grove’s railroads, Oregon’s landscapes and communities helped shape some remarkable moments in early film history.

Visit the marker, scan the QR code and use the SetJetters app to activate the stop and collect the City Girl digital badge.
