In ten months, Illinois students were secluded or restrained more than 15,000 times. Nearly 2,400 children. Over 90 percent of them had disabilities.

Then the law changed.

Illinois signed HB 219 into law. It passed the Senate 52-1 and the House 114-0. Under it:

🚫 Schools can no longer lock a child alone in a seclusion room
⚠️ Isolated time-out and restraint are allowed only when there’s an imminent risk of physical harm
⏳ Prone restraint, holding a child face down, is being phased out
📩 Parents must be notified after every incident

If your child is in school in Illinois, that notification is now your right. If you’re in another state, it’s worth asking your district what its rules are, and getting the answer in writing.
