Sheriff Kirk Imperati and the men and women of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office express profound sadness at the passing of Sergeant/Station Commander Nigel Barnett, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle crash this morning while traveling to work.
Sergeant Barnett was a 19-year veteran of the New York State Police, serving with dedication and distinction throughout his career. Prior to joining the State Police, he served as a Dutchess County Correction Officer, demonstrating his commitment to public service from the very beginning of his career.
During his time as a trooper, Sergeant Barnett worked in various locations throughout Dutchess County and worked closely alongside Dutchess County Deputy Sheriffs on patrol, forging strong working relationships before his promotion to Station Commander.
Sergeant Barnett was not only a respected member of the New York State Police, but also a trusted partner and friend to many within the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office. We are heartbroken by his passing and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the members of the State Police. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
