Was that really a sign?

Am I just looking for meaning?

What if I'm imagining it?

Those questions aren't necessarily a bad thing. Discernment matters.

But there's also a difference between discerning an experience and automatically talking ourselves out of it because we can't prove what happened.

Sometimes we can pause. Notice what we received. Pay attention to what it brought up in us. And allow it to be meaningful without immediately needing to explain it away or explain it completely.

We don't have to choose between unquestioning belief and complete dismissal.

There is room to be curious. There is room to wait. There is room to let something matter to us without having all the answers.

Sometimes the most discerning thing you can do is simply notice and wait.

When we hear "ancestral connection," it's easy to assume we're talking about spirit communication.

And for some people, that is part of the experience.

But connection can also be found in the ordinary things we carry forward.

Maybe it's both.

Maybe the first step isn't reaching somewhere else. Maybe it's noticing what's already here.

There is so much conversation around ancestral trauma and the patterns we need to break.

Those things matter.

But our ancestors were not only the wounds they carried.

They were resourceful. Creative. Adaptable. Protective. Skilled. Persistent. They figured things out, made things, cared for people, and found ways forward.

There may be more wisdom in your inheritance than you've been taught to look for.

As we move through this season thinking of them, speaking their names, remembering their stories, we're doing more than just remembering.

We're reaching out.

I've been sitting with this idea a lot lately: the more attention and love we give to someone we've lost, the more naturally we can feel their presence draw closer.

It's not just remembrance. It's a kind of reaching. And I believe our loved ones can answer that reaching in ways we don't always expect.

Tomorrow, I'm sharing a full blog post about why I think this time of year can make that connection feel especially strong. Why the veil can feel thinner. Why our loved ones can sometimes feel closer than usual.

If this resonates with you, keep an eye out for the blog tomorrow.

We often think of ancestral connection as something spiritual or mysterious.

But sometimes it's much closer to home.

It's your dad's hands. Your grandmother's hobby. A recipe that's been passed down through generations.

These ordinary things can be part of the connection too.

What's something you inherited from someone in your family?

We remember because we loved them. Because the time we shared mattered. And because who we are today was shaped by who they were.

I think sometimes we make remembrance more complicated than it needs to be.

You don't need a dedicated altar or a particular ritual. You don't need to follow a specific tradition or have everything figured out. A photograph on your nightstand, a favorite object, a recipe they used to make, or simply taking a few quiet moments to think about them can be enough.

What matters is creating something that feels honoring to you.

I wrote more about building a simple practice of remembrance in my free Resource Library.

One of the biggest things burnout taught me is that recovery isn't something you can copy from someone else.

For a long time, I thought there must be a "right" way to rest.

That if I could just find the perfect morning routine, journal practice, or self-care checklist, everything would fall into place.

Instead, I've learned that what I need can change from season to season, and sometimes even from one day to the next.

Some days I need quiet.

Some days I need time with people I love.

Some days I need to move my body.

Some days I need to float in the pool and simply exist.

Learning to ask myself, "What do I need right now?" has become one of the most important practices in my recovery.

The answer isn't always what I expect.

It isn't always comfortable.

But it's honest.

If you've been trying to recover by following someone else's formula, maybe today is an invitation to ask yourself a different question.

What would actually support you today?

I recently shared more about building a recovery toolkit that fits you, rather than trying to fit yourself into someone else's idea of healing. You can read it here, inside my free Resource Library: https://www.amycrandallmedium.com/p/spaces/237386/posts/809488-building-a-toolkit-that-actually-fits-you

I thought being emotionally in tune meant I was good with my own emotions. Then I realized: I wasn't feeling mine. I was feeling everyone else's. Full video on YouTube, link in bio. . . .
