Before you hit send, hit pause.

Texts, DMs, and social media should never be used to threaten, intimidate, repeatedly pressure, or control a partner. That includes pressuring someone for s*xual conversations, images, or activity or sharing intimate content without their consent.

Consent and boundaries matter online, too. A healthy relationship respects a partner’s privacy, choices, and right to say no whether you’re together in person or communicating through a screen.

Visit Military One Source for resources to help recognize and address harmful behaviors, or contact your local Family Advocacy Program to talk through your options.

Are your words more hurtful than heartfelt? Take a pause.

Words can do more than hurt feelings. Insults, threats, humiliation, guilt, or manipulation can be used to gain power and control including pressuring a partner into s*xual activity they don’t want.

Consent should never come from fear, guilt, pressure, or obligation. Healthy relationships make space for respect, safety, communication, and the freedom to say yes or no.

Visit Military One Source for resources to help recognize and address harmful behaviors, or contact your local Family Advocacy Program to talk through next steps.

Checking in with your partner shows care. Checking up on them to monitor where they are, who they’re with, or what they’re doing can cross into control.

That same need for control can show up in other areas of a relationship including s*x and intimacy. Monitoring, jealousy, pressure, or feeling entitled to a partner’s attention or body are not signs of a healthy relationship.

Healthy relationships leave room for trust, privacy, boundaries, and consent.

Take a pause. Visit Military One Source for resources to help recognize and address unhealthy patterns, or contact your local Family Advocacy Program to talk through next steps.

Controlling your partner’s access to money or making financial decisions for them without their input? Take a pause.

Abuse can involve more than physical violence. Just as financial abuse can take away a partner’s independence and choices, s*xual coercion can take away their ability to freely make decisions about their own body.

Pressure, manipulation, guilt, or ignoring boundaries around s*x and intimacy are not part of a healthy relationship.

Healthy relationships are built on respect, choice, boundaries, and consent.

Visit Military One Source for resources to help recognize harmful patterns and learn healthier ways to respond, or contact your local Family Advocacy Program for support.

Sexual assault is never the survivor’s fault. Prevention starts with the person choosing not to harm someone.

Respect boundaries. Understand consent. Look out for one another. Speak up when something isn’t right.

Do you intimidate, threaten, or use fear to control your partner during conflict?

Conflict should never leave someone feeling afraid or unsafe. Healthy relationships make room for disagreement without intimidation, threats, coercion, or control.

If you recognize these behaviors in yourself, support is available. Contact your local Family Advocacy Program to talk through your options or find resources through Military OneSource.

Take the pause. Make the call. Choose a safer response.
