October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

We wear purple to stand in solidarity with survivors, honor those we have lost, and declare that domestic violence has no place in our society. Awareness is the first step toward action, and together, we can break the cycle of abuse.

Visit https://www.dcjs.virginia.gov/victims-services to learn more about DCJS-facilitated grants, initiatives and other resources to prevent domestic violence and support those who have experienced it.

School Resource Officer (SRO) programs are built on leadership, trust and a commitment to serving students beyond traditional law enforcement responsibilities. In this engaging discussion, Sheriff Hieatt will share why investing in SROs has become a priority for his agency and how a well-supported SRO program strengthens schools, law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Last week, DCJS hosted Basic Victims Crisis Assistance and Response Team (VCART) training in Gloucester, bringing together professionals from across the Commonwealth to strengthen their ability to support victims, families, and communities following traumatic criminal incidents.

The training welcomed participants representing a range of fields, including behavioral health, emergency management, law enforcement, emergency communications, healthcare, and victim services.

The VCART program works with state and local partners to help ensure trained responders are available to provide crisis intervention, grief counseling, and other critical support when it matters most.

Thank you to Gloucester County Emergency Management for hosting and to our DCJS instructors — Julia Fuller-Wilson, Dawn Bush, Andrew Kinch, Marc Dawkins, Sharon Reed, and Carolyn Dellorso — for sharing their expertise and helping prepare professionals to respond with compassion and care during life's most difficult moments.
