Being one of the only para-sports without a non-disabled equivalent, goalball is literally in a league of it's own, and a sport that's as much fun to watch as it is to play. But so many people have different avenues of getting into new sports, and our special guests have the same experiences.

On Episode E137 founder/host Dominique chatted with special guests, Team USA Paralympic Men's and Women's Goalball athletes, 2x medalist Eliana Mason Young and men's captain Calahan Young we dive into the background of goalball and what drew these two athletes into the sport from the beginning.

⏩How did Eliana initially get into goalball?

⏩What are the elements of goalball and this community that allow athletes to thrive and succeed?

NEW VIDEO PODCAST EPISODE 137🎧
https://youtu.be/z7MnUk1LhXQ

We’ve got newlyweds on the podcast today, but they’re also Paralympians for Team USA Men’s and Women’s Goalball teams. Calahan Young from Pennsylvania with retinitis pigmentosa and Eliana Mason Young from Oregon with cataracts and glaucoma, their lives would merge in 2013 when they were just 17 and competing in tournaments. As their relationship blossomed, so did their careers. Eliana has earned a bronze and silver medal in two Paralympic Games and Calahan is the captain of the US Men’s team. And last July, they got married and are beginning their training for LA 2028 Paralympics!

🔥Here's the 4 takeaways🔥

💛Eliana and Calahan give each other superlatives, like Calahan’s favorite TV show, what they’re most competitive over off the court, what Eliana’s never leaving the store without, and their opposite ideas for a couple’s tattoo.

💛 Calahan, Eliana and Dominique talk about the mechanics of goalball and how it’s the only Paralympic sport without an Olympic counterpart, what led each of them to the sport, what skills from their athletic backgrounds has allowed them to have different tools when training, how to get playing goalball near you, and what’s the learning curve for a sport like goalball that requires a full vision shield.

💛STORY TIME is a double feature as Eliana talks about the time she showed her silver Paralympics medal to Stevie Wonder, and Calahan talks about how a recent injury, and surgery has shaped his recovery and love of getting back to goalball!

💛Relationship advice time! They open up about how they are able to support one another given their similar yet differing experiences with visual impairments, talk vulnerably about how past relationships differed from theirs, gave great advice on cultivating a successful and happy relationship whether inter-abled or both chronically ill/disabled, and the wish they have for each other as they both set up to win golds at the LA 2028 Paralympics. . . . . . . .

It's so we have to show our love and support for those part of this brilliant community💛💛

You are all fearless advocates for your health, knowing the value in supporting others and talking about chronic illness and openly. Our founder and executive director, Dominique, also lives in this stellar community and has built InvisiYouth to break down stigmas on what it's really like to be young and have chronic illness/disability. We deserve to live a fulfilled and fun life with any health struggles, while also making sure there are plenty of tools ready to learn how to thrive in life!! Let your story validate your journey, and always remember that!!

As founder and executive director Dominique says, "Validity for those living with all chronic illnesses does not require their health struggles to be visible." It's why she named InvisiYouth after her motto "always INVINCIble, never INVISIble."

48th addition to our audio resource, IYCS: Podcast Episode 136 with “The Mental Euphoria When You Realize One Bad Event Can't Ruin the Entire Day " 🎧

This is the another addition from our “Internal vs External Growth Series” and we’re focusing on the area of internal development for the last time, and specifically we are taking the time to gain information and a new perspective on how to make sure to reframe the parts of your mindset that you can control to improve the domino effect of your daily emotions to stay consistent 🔥

Learn the steps on the necessary to reframe what it means to have a setback, refuting the instinct to overgeneralize the negative from hooking into your entire plans, and the impact of a pivot to be creative, move forward and find new steps to take so momentum is unaffected and success is capable no matter the initial setback or challenge🔥

Plus, founder Dominique talks about a time when back-to-back flareups and injuries put her in a headspace of overgeneralizing the negative path and she had to actually pause, reframe and work on how to mentally separate the singular events from her future plans, while simultaneously learning how the pivot benefited her🔥

It's and the 50th addition to the coolest glossary you'll wanna read🎙️

This positive perspective shifting noun is gonna focus on internal development for the final time, and mainly emphasizing how to achieve that strengthened mental wellbeing when tackling different areas of life. This will specifically showcase the skills on how to approach the moments when a major setback or a detour to the plan spontaneously dampens the moment, and how do you encounter the setback in a way that doesn’t fracture all the hard work done or can be done in the future by a singular moment. Thus, the creation of our latest addition: CRUSTY BREAD SYNDROME 📑

"the perspective shift that enables even bad/challenging/struggling experiences to be allowed to hold space for their power while simultaneously empowering oneself to comprehend that not a singular negative and/or challenging experience or situation can determine the entire perspective on it, but rather, allow oneself to also find good within the bad."
