Good morning, Rio Hondo.
Crews are currently out working on Robert Garza Rd., preparing for the paving of the road, which is projected to begin next week.
We understand the public's frustration. We are working with our state and local partners to ensure that the project is completed to the greatest possible standard—including the proper drainage needed to protect people's homes and quality roadways to mitigate premature deterioration.
The project is still on track to be completed ahead of schedule, although it has taken longer than expected. The project deadline is the first week of January 2027, and the project is set to be completed within the next three weeks.
This project is being paid for with a grant awarded by the General Land Office, a state entity. The GLO also has its standards in place to protect taxpayer funds. As part of their responsibilities, the GLO is auditing this project to ensure that all expenses are in order. Audits are normal and, quite frankly, appreciated, as they ensure accountability for all parties involved in handling taxpayer funds. At this time, we do not anticipate this standard process to delay the project further.
We appreciate the public's patience. Infrastructure upgrades and new development may bring inconveniences, but they also bring the prospect of a better future for the City of Rio Hondo and her residents.
