⚡ POWER RESTORED ⚡

This week, an EF2 tornado, confirmed by the National Weather Service, tracked through the area between Aurora and Rising Sun, knocking down multiple transmission poles that feed our entire city. That damage caused a power outage lasting approximately 40 hours.

We know that was a long, difficult stretch for our community, and we want to thank everyone for the patience and the way neighbors and businesses looked out for one another through it.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this recovery happen:

Our RSMU Electric, Water, and Wastewater crews, who worked around the clock to get our city back up and running, and kept critical infrastructure operating throughout, including water flowing and the wastewater treatment plant functioning

Our RSMU office staff, who supported the response throughout this event

Indiana Municipal Power Agency and IMEA, who offered mutual aid resources and guidance navigating the storm emergency

Duke Energy crews and contractors from across the state, who worked through very rough terrain to repair the damaged line

Ohio County Communications for their support throughout this event

The Rising Sun Street Department (City of Rising Sun)

Ohio County Highway Department

Everyone who stopped to drop off bottled water and check on our crews and neighbors, that kindness did not go unnoticed.

This was one of the more significant events we've ever faced, and we're proud of how our community and our crews responded. We're grateful to serve a community that looks out for one another, even through a tough stretch like this one.

⚠️ Generator Safety Reminder ⚠️

Using a generator while we restore power? Make sure it's connected with a transfer switch. Never plug it directly into your home's wiring.

A generator without a transfer switch can backfeed power into the lines, putting our linemen at serious risk even when they think a line is dead.

Restoration Update:
Great progress overnight, contractor crews set 7 of the 9 new transmission poles.

Remaining pole work and getting wire back in the air will continue today.

Current estimates from our contractor crews have power restoration targeted for this evening, though timelines can shift depending on what crews encounter in the field.

Thank you for your continued patience.

⚠️ Reminder: if you're running a generator, make sure it's connected with a transfer switch not plugged directly into your home's wiring to keep our crews safe while they work.

Restoration Update
Contractor crews are on site now setting new poles and getting wire back up in the air. Work is moving forward and we'll keep you posted as restoration continues.
Thank you for your patience. We know being without power isn't easy, and our crews and contractors are working hard to get everyone back on.

⚠️ Reminder: if you're running a generator, make sure it's connected with a transfer switch not plugged directly into your home's wiring to keep our crews safe while they work.

UPDATE: We have learned that repairs to the damaged line feeding Rising Sun could take several days. The utility responsible for that repair is having difficulty securing the contractors and equipment needed to complete the work.

We have also been in contact with our county Emergency Management office to help coordinate resources for our community during this outage.
We understand how difficult an extended outage is, especially for those with medical needs, refrigeration concerns, or young children and elderly family members. Please check on neighbors, particularly those who may be more vulnerable.
We will continue posting updates as we have them. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.

02:45

UPDATE: We've been in direct contact with the utility that owns the damaged poles feeding power into Rising Sun. Replacement poles have to be brought in from out of the area, and repair work can't begin until daylight.

This means power will likely be out through the night and into tomorrow.

We do not have a firm timeline for restoration at this point.
We'll continue posting updates here.

🚨 POWER OUTAGE UPDATE 🚨

01:20
RSMU crews are on scene after storms knocked down multiple poles between Rising Sun and Aurora.

Our crews are assessing the damage now and will work as safely and quickly as possible.

Please stay clear of any downed lines or poles treat all lines as energized, even if they look dead.

We will post updates here as we have more information.

⚠️ Generator Safety Reminder ⚠️

If you are running a portable generator at your home during an outage, you must turn OFF your main disconnect (main breaker) in your electric panel.

This is critical for two reasons:

It protects our linemen who may be working on the lines. Backfeeding power from a generator can seriously injure or kill someone.

It protects your home and your generator from damage when normal power is restored.

Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet or panel unless you have a properly installed transfer switch.

When in doubt:
👉 Turn off your main breaker
👉 Use extension cords from the generator to appliances
👉 Keep the generator outside and away from windows/doors

Your safety — and our crews’ safety — depends on it.

🚧 Sewer Maintenance Notice – Front Street 🚧

Contractors will be sewer jetting the sewer main on Front Street from 2nd Street to 4th Street.

This work helps keep our sewer system flowing properly and prevents future backups. During this time, residents in the area may notice some noise or brief sewer-related odors.

Thank you for your patience as we complete this important maintenance!
