Around this time some years ago (maybe around 2016-2020), faculty from our EMHS department were broadcast in their weather-themed Halloween costumes on THV11 by one of our own amazing alumni, Skot Covert!
Skot Covert graduated from ATU with an Emergency Administration and Management degree in 2012, and has since gone one to become a 3x Emmy Award winning meteorologist with THV11 and 5News. Astounding work!

Meet John Aiden Hanna, a Senior Emergency Management & Homeland Security student graduating in May 2027! John chose EMHS because it aligned with his career goals and his desire to help others while making a positive impact in his community. He was also drawn to the program because of the supportive faculty and their commitment to student success.

One accomplishment John is especially proud of is becoming an EMT and working full-time in EMS while earning his bachelor's degree. Balancing both responsibilities has challenged him, helped him grow professionally, and reinforced his passion for serving others.

After graduation, John hopes to begin a career with an organization that aligns with his goals and continue growing professionally throughout his career.
When he's not studying or working, John enjoys spending time with family, being outdoors, and playing chess.

Charlotte came to Arkansas Tech University from the Pacific Northwest with a strong interest in sustainability and environmental issues.

This summer, she completed an internship with Sara Jondahl, Director of Sustainability and Resilience for the City of Russellville, where she gained hands-on experience and built valuable professional connections.

She is already putting that experience to work this fall by assisting faculty with an interdisciplinary climate change course, continuing to expand her knowledge and skills in the field.

Great work, Charlotte! We look forward to seeing what you accomplish next. 👏

Calling all ATU EMHS alumni, friends, faculty, and supporters — help us celebrate a major milestone!

Arkansas Tech University’s Emergency Management & Homeland Security program is turning 30, and we want to honor the people who have helped shape its story.

We’re looking for 30 alumni to recognize through EMHS 30 for 30 — graduates whose service, leadership, careers, and commitment have made a difference in their communities and beyond.

Know someone who should be celebrated? Nominate yourself or another EMHS alum today: www.atualumni.com/emhs30for30

Back in 2024, ATU hosted Warning Coordination Meteorologist Dennis Cavanaugh from the National Weather Service in a volunteer education program known as Skywarn! This program teaches multiple volunteers how to spot and report storms before and during formation, so that they can alert the appropriate channels (your local NWS office) and spread the word before disaster potentially strikes. These volunteers are known as Weather/Storm Spotters.
We here in the EMHS department highly recommend programs like these, because we are constantly on the lookout for ways to save lives. The need for help doesn't start when the storm is over, it actually starts before it even begins.

Keep an eye out for any Skywarn programs being hosted around town or near you!
