On Saturday, I attended a Iu Mien event to celebrate 50 years since members of the Iu Mien settled in the United States after the end of the Vietnam War and the fall of Saigon. It was a pleasure to see such a rich and vibrant celebration of Iu Mien culture combined with genuine patriotism for our country and love for our Sacramento County community.

It was a somber Memorial Day event at Koobs Nature Area to remember La Sierra High School alumni in Carmichael who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country during the Vietnam War. Thank you to the community members who turned out to pray, remember, and honor local neighbors, friends, and classmates.

Whether itโ€™s raising money for families in need, helping travelers navigate the airport, or building new homes, there are dozens of ways volunteers in Sacramento County make a difference in our community. This year, Sacramento Countyโ€™s Adult and Aging Commission is celebrating five compassionate individuals who, instead of slowing down as they aged, decided to get involved and make a difference where they live. To celebrate these individuals, the commission is awarding them with the 2026 5 Over 50 Award. To win, each volunteer must be over the age of 50 and must be nominated by at least two people who see the standout work they are doing.
