BREAKING: Leading California Grassroots Reparations Coalition Responds to Gavin Newsom Signing SB 518 Bureau for Desdendants of American Slavery:

It's can't be Reparations for us if it's open to almost anyone. And this Bureau IS open to almost anyone.
Reparations delayed, Reparations diverted, is Reparations denied!
We can do better than this.
And we will.
Our Key Concerns. The Bureau is:
• Reparations Diversion: It expands eligibility beyond descendants of people enslaved in the U.S.
• Bureaucracy Without Repair: It provides no payments, restitution, or wealth restoration.
• Delay by Design: It's tied to years of study before any real repair.
• Erosion of Trust: They tried (and failed) to place the bureau under law enforcement oversight.
• Departure from Task Force: It breaks from California’s own Reparations plan.

California Senate Bill 518 by San Diego Senator Akilah Weber-Pierson proposes creating a Reparations Bureau (called the Bureau for Descendants of American Slavery) within the California Department of Justice — which is a law enforcement agency.
No Reparations system should run through a law enforcement agency. Period. And housing the Bureau in a law enforcement agency raises serious privacy risks.
And if you thought it couldn't get any worse, because of the way the bill is written, this Bureau WILL expand services to people who are NOT descendants of people freed from Chattel Slavery in the U.S.

STOP THE STUDY! STOP THE STALL! Tell CA Assemblymembers to VOTE NO ON SB437!
SB437 is a bill that, if passed and signed into law, would WASTE millions of your tax dollars on an unnecessary 3-5 year study of Reparations genealogy that even genealogists say is unnecessary! California's Reparations Task Force, which already spent 2 years researching and studying issues including genealogy and Reparations, made it clear: We don't need to STUDY how to do genealogy for Reparations; we need to hire genealogists to DO genealogy!
It gets worse. If SB437 becomes law, it could mean no other state bill, program, or resource for descendants of persons emancipated from U.S Chattel Slavery can happen until this research (that we don't need) is complete. So SB 437 could STALL Reparations and other much-needed resources for YEARS!

FYI: California Reparations-related bills and are OFFICIALLY headed to the Assembly Floor for a final vote after passing the in the Assembly Appropriations Committee!!!
SB1403 and SB1331 create a state agency and state fund to implement Reparations, help residents trace their ancestry for eligibility, as well as support current and future Reparations funding. SB1050 creates a path to restitution and compensation for descendants of U.S. chattel Slavery who had property taken from them for racially motivated reasons!!!
