Proud to celebrate the Z-VYBE 2026 graduating cohort at Luther Burbank and have the opportunity to give welcome remarks.

These young people spent the year building their confidence, finding their voices, exploring higher education, prioritizing their wellness, and growing as leaders.

Seeing their journey reminded me why investing in young people matters so much. When we give them the space, resources, and support to lead, they rise to the occasion.

Congratulations, Z-VYBE! This is only the beginning.

Mr. Singh is one of our Sacramento neighbors.

What happened to him in Wyoming is horrifying, and as he recovers, my heart is with him and his family.

While authorities continue investigating what led to this attack, I also know many Sikh and Punjabi families are carrying real fear right now.

So I want to say this clearly: You belong here. You are part of Sacramento. And I stand with you.

In this city, when one of our neighbors is hurting, we don’t look away. We move closer.

Praying for your healing, Mr. Singh. Sacramento is ready to welcome you home.

STATEMENT FROM TRUSTEE CHINUA RHODES

My heart is with Mr. Singh, a Sacramento resident and truck driver recovering after being stabbed 17 times at a rest area in Wyoming.

Authorities have not established a motive, and that investigation must continue. At the same time, we cannot ignore the fear many Sikh and Punjabi families are experiencing or the impact of rhetoric that stereotypes and demeans members of their community.

To Sacramento’s Sikh community and every community that feels targeted because of who they are, where they come from, or how they worship: You belong here, and I stand with you.

When one of our neighbors is hurting, Sacramento doesn’t look away. We move closer.

Mi preciosa helping her Mother put up the Mexican flag 🇲🇽

Today means a lot in our house. As a father, one of the things I’m most proud of is watching our kids grow up knowing and loving their culture.

They’re first generation born here in the U.S. and we’re raising them with the understanding that they are 100% Mexican and 100% African American. They do not have to split their identity, choose one side, or feel like they are only part of either culture. They are whole. Not just on days like today, but everyday…. in the food, the music, the traditions, the stories, the language, and the family they come from.

Today marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month a time to celebrate the history, culture, leadership, and contributions of Latino and Hispanic communities across our country and right here in Sacramento.

As a school board trustee, I’m reminded that the diversity of our students and families is one of our greatest strengths. Our schools should be places where every young person sees their culture celebrated, their story valued, and their future supported.

Over the next month, I’m looking forward to celebrating the students, families, educators, and community leaders who continue to make Sacramento stronger.

September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month, and SCUSD celebrates our Hispanic students, staff, families, and community!

Grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside my labor brothers and sisters at the annual Central Labor Council x Loaves & Fishes volunteer day. There’s something powerful about spending the morning giving back with people who understand that solidarity isn’t just something we talk about it’s something we practice.
