Sea otters' paws are as sensitive as ours? Fascinating! And, no... we would not like to reach into dark crevices for urchins and crabs, thank you.

Happy 40th anniversary to the beautiful and fun Elkhorn Slough Reserve, at Moss Landing! Few places offer such good views of sea otters. Volunteer Robert Scoles' experience (below) was truly exceptional.

For here's a story from one of our Research Otter Monitors, Robert Scoles, who recalls a shocking moment in the life cycle of an otter:

"In April of 2011, while monitoring in the Yampah Tidal Creek, I noticed a hauled-out otter that looked to be having seizures. I called over the radio to tell my colleagues what I was seeing.

The otter disappeared from view and the water turned reddish. I reported that it appeared the otter had cut itself, and when the otter came back into view, it looked like the intestines were exposed! Then, the otter pulled on the tissue and a small pup appeared. As I had just done a count, and there were no small pups in the area, the question on my mind was 'Where’d this pup come from?'

'...Its’ an otter birth!' I called over the radio. Apparently several people were listening in because there was a lot of cheering!"

Southern Sea Otter mothers often use the Elkhorn Slough's marshes as nurseries to give birth and raise their pups. Learn more about it at our upcoming "Evenings at the Estuary" next Thursday, August 15th! Details here: https://www.elkhornslough.org/events/stories-of-the-southern-sea-otter/
