On behalf of the California State Sheriffs’ Association (CSSA), Undersheriff Mike Ziegler had the privilege of presenting two John Sully Memorial Scholarships to two outstanding students from Antelope High School.
The John Sully Memorial Scholarship honors the legacy of former Sonoma County Undersheriff John Sully, who served with distinction as second-in-command and stepped forward as Acting Sheriff when called upon. Through this scholarship, CSSA continues his commitment to service, leadership, and supporting the next generation.
Congratulations to Harlin Babrah and Joleen Tobancay on receiving this well-deserved scholarship. We are proud to support you as you pursue your future goals!

On 5/23/26 at about 9:00 a.m., the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a report of possible explosives discovered inside a residence. The home had previously belonged to the caller’s father, a former military demolitions instructor.
Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel responded and located two half-blocks of C4 explosive material, two incendiary gr***des, and one smoke gr***de. All items were safely collected to be properly destroyed by EOD personnel.
To put the power of the recovered C4 into perspective, an accidental detonation could have caused catastrophic damage within approximately 150 feet, while dangerous fragmentation and debris could have traveled up to 600 feet.
If you ever discover possible military ordnance, explosives, or suspicious devices, do not touch or move them. Leave the area immediately and call 9-1-1.

When someone in Sacramento County calls 911 during the worst moment of their life, the voice on the other end matters.
That’s why the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is proud to recognize Communications Dispatcher Gina Simonsma for earning her Emergency Number Professional (ENP) Certification — becoming the first and only member of our agency to achieve this nationally recognized credential.
The ENP certification, offered through the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), represents advanced expertise in 911 operations, emergency communications technology, leadership, and industry standards. Fewer than 1,700 professionals nationwide — and only 143 in California — currently hold this certification.
This accomplishment reflects Gina’s commitment to professionalism, continued education, and providing the highest level of service to our community. Her specialized training and knowledge help strengthen our ability to support both first responders and the citizens of Sacramento County when every second counts.
Please join us in congratulating Gina on this outstanding achievement and historic milestone for our agency.
