We filmed this in Altadena, in an Eaton Fire burn zone, where too many families learned the hard way that their insurance wouldn’t cover a rebuild.
About 70% of California homes are underinsured. That’s why I co-authored SB 876, which is now officially law. Insurers will have to pay people faster and give them real options for more coverage, so families can actually get back on their feet.

So grateful to receive support from supervisors across California’s Central Valley, including Leticia Perez, Lucas Frerichs, and Luis Alejo. The region faces unique challenges around insurance availability and affordability, and I’ve valued hearing directly from local leaders about what their communities are experiencing. New Zealand covers some basic natural disaster damage – though not fires – up to about $175,000 USD, while private insurers handle supplemental policies. The median home value in California is almost $1 million. This is not comprehensive coverage, and Spain and France don’t provide it either.
Californians need someone ready to hold the insurance industry accountable and fix the problems we have now, not blow it all up for the sake of it.
