marks the day in 1865 when enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, were finally told they were free. More than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

That unjust delay is part of America’s story, freedoms written into law not always guaranteeing freedoms fully lived.

In Sacramento, where enslaved people were brought during the Gold Rush and Black leaders helped build California’s early civil rights movement, we honor this day by celebrating Black resilience and recommitting ourselves to the work of true equality for all Black Americans.

Thanks to a vital investment of $38 million in federal and state funds, the city of Sacramento can now expand internet access to more than 4,000 homes in underserved neighborhoods across the city. Helping connect families, students, and small businesses to the opportunities that come with reliable, high-speed internet service.

I fought for this historic broadband investment because I believe where you live should never determine your access to opportunity.

I had a fabulous time with my friends at the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce last night! Gatherings like these are so important because they give neighbors, small business owners, community leaders, and Chamber members a chance to connect and share ideas. That is how we build stronger relationships and move Elk Grove forward together.

I had a fantastic meeting with the Galt Chamber of Commerce for an important conversation about strengthening Galt’s local economy.

Galt knows what it takes for small towns to succeed: investing in workforce development, supporting the small businesses that keep Galt moving, and helping local employers navigate economic uncertainty.

Our region succeeds when workers have the skills they need, entrepreneurs have the tools to grow, and small businesses have strong partners at all levels of government. I will continue working to deliver the stability, resources, and opportunities our communities deserve.

Thank you to the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation, and the entire SMUD team for bringing us together today to celebrate the completion of SASF’s brand new electric kitchen.

This project reflects something I have always admired about SMUD. SMUD doesn’t just talk about innovation. It brings innovation directly into our neighborhoods.

I often tell my colleagues in Washington that Sacramento is showing the country what practical climate leadership looks like. We don’t sit around debating whether progress is possible.

We build it. We do it through partnerships. We do it through local leadership.

Our district is not just defined by the capital city. Large swathes of the region are home to farmers and rural communities with unique and equally as pressing needs.

Thank you to the California Association of Winegrape Growers for such an informative tour. I am committed to making sure the agricultural future in our region is prosperous.

Fourteen years ago, DACA opened doors for hundreds of thousands of young people who call America home, supporting their pursuit of an education, a career, and a future free from fear.

In our region and across the country, the American Dream cannot become a reality for all if we allow our neighbors to be left behind.

DACA reflects the power of our nation to ensure opportunity is not lost. Our country was built by immigrants. Turning our backs on them is never an option.

I was honored to march in the Sacramento Pride Parade and stand side-by-side with the LGBTQI+ community. Fighting for an equal and just future for all is not just central to my work, it’s why I got into public service.

Pride isn’t just about rainbows and parades: it’s a protest for justice, dignity, and equal rights for the LGBTQI+ community. Pride is a demand we cannot stop making until every person regardless of s*xual orientation, gender identity, or s*x characteristics—is truly equal.

Juneteenth is first and foremost a day of joy. It’s a celebration of freedom, community, and the generations of Black Americans whose courage and perseverance helped move our nation forward.

As we celebrate Juneteenth this week, let us honor those who came before us by continuing their work. Let us keep opening doors of opportunity. Let us keep building stronger communities.
