The Class A Uniform
You may have seen a member of our fire department wearing a uniform like the ones pictured here.
This is the department's Class A, or dress, uniform. It is typically worn only for formal occasions such as funerals, memorial services, parades, award ceremonies, and other significant events, often by members of the department's Honor Guard.
Class A uniforms are purchased by the individual member at their own expense. The department typically provides only the badge and rank insignia known simply as "the brass."
Every detail of the uniform is carefully maintained. Each piece of hardware is precisely measured for perfect placement. The boots are polished to a mirror shine. Every loose thread, speck of lint, or stray hair is removed. The goal is simple: present a professional appearance that reflects the pride and tradition of the fire service.
Ironically, the time spent preparing the uniform often exceeds the amount of time it is actually worn. Most people will never notice the hours of preparation or the meticulous attention to detail. But those who have served in the fire service, or who have been close to someone who has, understand that the uniform represents far more than neatly polished brass and pressed fabric. It reflects discipline, respect for the profession, and a commitment to honoring both those we serve and those who came before us.
