🚧 Improvements from Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) are underway. All southbound lanes of I-5 between I-405 and I-84 will be closed beginning September 11 for up to five weeks. One lane will remain open to the Broadway exit.

While it may be inconvenient (expect trips to take up to 2 to 3 times longer if no one changes their driving patterns in that time), this project will make our roads safer and improve congestion.

Yesterday I had the honor of sitting down with Geoff Norcross on OPB’s Think Out Loud to discuss upcoming legislative efforts to end solitary confinement in the Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC).

My office sent a letter signed by 12 of my colleagues to the Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC) Director Mike Reese to request ODOC amend its administrative rules and operational policies to, at a minimum, align with the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, commonly known as the Nelson Mandela Rules - which include limiting prolonged solitary confinement to no more than 15 consecutive days.

While I am hopeful for an operational fix, my office intends to introduce legislation in 2027 that codifies these standards into Oregon statute to ensure consistency and equity across the board.

I believe in a world where we treat people, including adults in custody, with the basic human dignity and respect that they deserve that is inherent to all of us as human beings.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Portland Pride weekend! The waterfront festival begins today, 7/18 and the parade is on Sunday 7/19 starting at 11am.

As a proud member of Portland DSA, the LGBTQIA+ Caucus, and lifelong Beavertonian, I was thrilled to attend Beaverton Pride in the Park on June 28. We were joined by an overwhelming number of people all there to reaffirm the deeply held belief of many that “trans and q***r people should exist, billionaires shouldn’t.”

But let us not forget that Pride is not just a celebration, it is resistance against ongoing attacks on the q***r community, many of which have been targeted at our Trans siblings lately. The first pride was a riot led by BIPOC trans leaders like Marsha P Johnson and was a direct revolutionary response to police brutality and attacks against LGBTQIA+ existence, safety, and joy.

Today I was honored to stand in solidarity on the line at an informational picket alongside SEIU Local 49workers who are fighting for their first contract at Providence St. Vincent.

I was excited to hear my colleague, Rep. Rob Nosse, who sang Tom Petty’s song ‘I Won’t Back Down’ and to sing along with my soon to be colleague, Dr. Tammy Carpenter.

Workers’ rights are human rights, and ALL workers deserve a fair and equitable workplace. ✊💜🪧

Last week my team and I were back in the Oregon State Capitol for Legislative Days. Every few months my colleagues and I get back together for three days to attend Committee hearings, meet with constituents and lobby groups, and advocate for our constituents in person. It felt like the first week back at school.

I was especially excited to meet with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue Deputy Fire Chief Patrick Fale who keeps our district safe. I also met with a constituent, Sawyer, who was there to self advocate on behalf of Oregonians with disabilities.

When we are not in Salem, my staff and I are still here to help with any issues you might have in the district, with state agencies, or with other legislative needs.
